2018 will be the year of the "Stans" - Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kasakhststan...you get the idea.
This is no country for my trusty BMW R1200GSA - so a lightweight enduro bike that could carry some luggage and a bit of fuel needed to be found. The base for my new lightweight Adventure Bike is the Husqvarna 701- but it needed to be gutted and completely adapted to the way ahead- bad roads - bad fuel- and plenty of gear for a three moths trip along the Old Silk Road along the Chinese and Afghan borders.
By pure chance and lots of luck I stumbled into the Showroom of Streifeneder Motorcycles near Munich- mainly because the guy answering the phone sounded easygoing and friendly. Little did I know that I will spend endless nights with them tinkering with the conversion of an Enduro bike into an Adventure Dream Machine, eating pizzas the size of a wagon-wheel and being served spagetti-icecream daily at 5pm.
When it came to do some serious gas-shielded welding and decal work they called in the "Bachhuber Brothers"- the local experts in fast welding and even faster wheat-beer drinking.
Many thanks again go to the whole Streifeneder Team - Lukas, Willi and Fabian Streifeneder, Niki Hörmann and the "Bachhuber Brothers" for all their help, hospitality and incredibly generous sponsorship of this project!
A long list of all the mods done on the Husky 701 will follow in a later post.
